Port Meadow in Wolvercote, Oxford

Port Meadow is a large historical meadow at the edge of the city of Oxford. It is a meadow of open common land beside the River Thames to the north and west of Oxford and is only a 10 minute walk away from our guest house in Oxford. You can swim, boat, walk, picnic either side of the river or just sit and ponder. Although there is much to do whilst visiting Oxford with young children, they love the freedom that is created by being in an open space and get a break from visiting mueums and historical buildings.
Port Meadow is a huge and open space for centuries and has largely remained unbruised by modern development. It has the River Thames running through it, is home for part of the year to grazing horses and cattle, turns violently yellow in the wet spring season of buttercups, goes frosty, misty and mysterious in winter; is the scene for gatherings in the summer days and evenings and has acres to play in. You can enter from Jericho, or from the top end. You can drink on your way round at the Perch pub as you approach Godstow Abbey along the river, and at various pubs in Wolvercote (The Trout, Jacob's Inn, The White Hart in Wolvercote) and you can walk back to town along the canal towpath with another refreshment option at The Plough Inn. You can also bike on it, fly kites, swim at the Bathing Place in Wolvercote, walk dogs, and breathe in the air.

This is an ideal spot for both walkers and runners alike. When you away from home and staying at a guest house in Oxford it is wonderful to find open spaces bursting with the energy that only nature can provide. At Port Meadow you will find cattle and horses grazing, and along Willow Walk you can spot a Heron and sometimes Kingfishers, as well as other water birds.
I personally love walking and running through Port Meadow most: a slice to country between the miles in town. It always appears full of life - and not just for the cows! Families, dog walkers, students rowing, teenagers swimming, boats mooring... I could go on. Port meadow has stunning views and the sunrise and sunset are both particularly mesmerising.

Port Meadow rates 14 out of 168 places to visit in Oxford - a must see when you choose to stay at our guest house in Oxford. I also love going to Port Meadow for my morning meditation and cease every oppourtunity to do so.

Thank you very much for reading and considering the Marlborough House Hotelfor your visit to Oxford.
